Recently he won the award for the Best Afrobeats in a new category that was introduced at the MTV VMAs with his hit single titled “Calm Down” which he featured an international singer known as “Selena Gomez”.

Rema was born Divine Ikubor on 1st May 2000 and was signed to Mavin Records by the label’s CEO Don Jazzy in 2019 and in the same year he rose to stardom with his single titled “Dumebi”.

The story of his early life has it that Rema was born into a Christian family in Benin City, Edo State of Nigeria. While growing up, he used to sing and rap in his secondary school days.

History has it that Rema’s musical career began in 2019 when he made a viral freestyle video on Instagram to a song done by D’Prince and titled “Gucci Gang” and it got the attention of D’Prince who brought him to Lagos and signed him to his record label “Jonzing World”.

Rema’s biggest achievement in 2023 was when he won the award for the ‘Best Afrobeats’ at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs). Rema bagged the award on Tuesday, September 12th, at the Prudential Center, Newark, New Jersey.

The award for the Best Afrobeats is a new category that was introduced at the MTV VMAs, and it’s emergence saw Rema becoming the first African artist to win it. The award was made possible by the remix of his song, ‘Calm Down’ which features American female singer Selena Gomez.

Rema’s contenders for the same award were ‘It’s Plenty’ by Burna Boy, ‘Unavailable’ by Davido featuting Musa Key’s, ‘Rush’ by Ayra Starr, ‘People’ by Libianca, ‘2 Sugar,’ by Wizkid ft Ayrra Starr, and ‘Bandana’ by Fireboy DML featuring Asake.

So far so good, ‘Calm Down’ remix has achieved a remarkable success internationally because it became the first song ever to maintain a place on the Billboard US Afrobeats Songs chart for a full year. as well as claim the prestigious title of inaugural No.1 hit on The Official MENA Chart.

While giving his acceptance speech, Rema paid tribute and respects to Nigerian artists who paved the way for him to go that far, and those he mentioned included the late Fela Kuti, Don Jazzy, and D’Prince (his label head), Tuface Idibia, D’Banj, Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy.

He said: “This means so much seeing Afrobeats grow this big and me representing Afrobeats tonight. I am so happy. Shoutout to the people who opened the doors for me”

He ended his speech by encouraging contemporary Afrobeats upcoming artists to maintain the same passion as his role models, emphasizing the importance of opening doors for emerging talents, just as his idols had done in the past.

Since Rema came to limelight in 2019, his notable achievements sine 2020 are:

  1. Rema’s song was included on the FIFA 21 soundtracks in September, 2020.
  2. In May 2021, Rema announced that he would be calling his sound “Afrorave”, which he invented as a subgenre of Afrobeats with influences of Arabian and Indian music which has led to him having one of the strongest fanbases in the country known as Ravers.
  3. In September 2021, Rema and his label mate Ayra Starr were unveiled as a brand ambassador for the popular soft drink Pepsi.
  4. On the 7th of November 2022, Rema received an award on stage during his London concert as his songs achieved 1 billion streams worldwide.
