But before then, Chocolate City was founded as a nightclub in 1997 in the northern part of Nigeria and in 2001 Audu Maikori and Paul Okeugo will go on to find the Guild of Artistes and Poets which they called an “arts appreciation society”.
This guild held weekly meetings placing their focus on the arts, music, poetry and creativity as a way of engaging and empowering the youths. And in 2005 Chocolate City officially launched and established itself as a record label in Nigeria.
Few years later Nigerian rapper and song-writer who goes by the name MI will take on the leadership of Chocolate City and tried to expand it by creating sub-labels like “100 Crowns” which signed Blaqbonez and UpNorth Records which signed Classiq and Dijay inch
Chocolate City operates as a subsidiary of Chocolate City Group and has other arms of the group which includes Chocolate City Distribution, Chocolate City Events, CCX, and Chocolate City Media.
On 28 March 2019, Chocolate City will expand further by signing a worldwide distribution deal with Warner Music Group.
